Sound Familiar?

Does this sound like your 3pm?

  • You back out of the driveway on mirrors alone, because your neck will not turn that far
  • The headache starts at the base of your skull and settles in behind one eye
  • You wake up already knowing which way you slept
  • Two new pillows this year and neither one fixed it
  • By the last hour at your desk your shoulders are up around your ears
  • Pins and needles down one arm when you hold the phone to your ear too long

Why It Happens

The neck and the headache are the same problem.

The top joints of your neck and the muscles at the base of your skull refer pain straight up into your head. That is why so many headaches are really neck headaches, and why another ibuprofen never actually settles them. Underneath it is usually a mix: those top joints gone stiff, a mid back that stopped moving so the neck does the work of two, deep neck muscles that quietly quit after an old flare or a car accident, and shoulders that hold tension from 8am to 5pm.

You cannot stretch your way through that, because stretching never tells you which piece is doing the pulling. A cause-first evaluation does. Then we treat the thing that is actually driving it, which often means hands-on work at those top joints plus dry needling into the muscles keeping the headache alive. Get to the root of it and you get your afternoons back.

The Honest Truth

Nobody plans an afternoon around their neck. You just do it.

If you keep waiting

  • The headaches stop being an event and start being the baseline
  • You cut whatever makes it worse: the long drive, the gym, the book at night
  • The pills go up, the relief goes down, and nothing underneath has been fixed

If you start this week

  • You find out on visit one whether your headaches are coming from your neck
  • Hands-on work the same day, and dry needling if it is the right fit for you
  • A plan with an endpoint, plus the desk and sleep changes that stop the relapse

Nobody regrets starting too early. You have powered through every one of these afternoons, and powering through is not the same as fixing it.

How We Fix It

The same four phases. Built for necks and headaches.

Every plan has an endpoint. Here is what the four phases look like when the neck and the headache are one problem.

Starts visit one

Pain

Turn the headache down.

Manual therapy at the stiff joints up top, and dry needling into the muscles referring pain into your head. Always optional, and relief work starts your first visit.

Once the pain settles

Prime

Get your rotation back.

We open up the neck and the mid back together, so your neck stops covering for a rib cage that quit moving years ago.

Once it moves freely again

Perform

Build a neck that lasts all day.

Deep neck and shoulder blade strength, trained in the positions you actually live in: the screen, the truck, the pillow.

Before you are cleared

Prevent

Keep the afternoons.

Your desk, your sleep setup and your phone habits get sorted, and you leave knowing exactly what to do at the first sign of a flare. That is the endpoint.

A lot of my life I’ve struggled with headaches, and Jordan listened and suggested dry needling. After our first session I felt relief for the first time in a long time. I’ve now gone back to Jordan and Cultivate multiple times for headaches, pregnancy pains, and posture issues and it has been life changing!

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking for neck pain.

Almost never, and waiting on one only delays the part that helps. Scans of necks that feel completely fine routinely show disc changes and wear, so a picture does not tell us what is driving your pain or your headaches. A hands-on exam of how your neck moves does. If imaging turns out to be genuinely necessary, we help you get it. Texas does not require a physician referral to see a physical therapist, so you can start now.

Yes, and gentle motion usually does more for a neck than a collar or total rest. Hurt does not always mean harm here, and holding your neck rigid all day is part of what keeps the headaches coming. The skill is dosing the right movement for your neck, which is what the evaluation is for, one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, every visit. Anything that flares you up gets changed, not pushed through.

That depends on how long your neck has been like this and whether headaches are part of it, so you get a real answer at the evaluation instead of a number off a web page. Your plan runs the four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent, and you will always know which one you are in and what is left. A plan with an endpoint costs you less than another year of appointments that never finish.
